Early Life and Draft
Martin Hanzal was born in České Budějovice, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) on February 22, 1987. His early hockey career began in his hometown with HC České Budějovice.
NHL Draft and Colorado Avalanche
In 1999, Hanzal was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the seventh round (212th overall) of the NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in 2003-04 with the Avalanche, appearing in 12 games.
Trade to Carolina Hurricanes
In March 2003, Hanzal was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Bates Battaglia. He spent the next four seasons with the Hurricanes, becoming a regular on the team's second line.
Arizona Coyotes
After his contract with the Hurricanes expired, Hanzal signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Coyotes in 2017. He has since become an important part of the Coyotes' offense, playing primarily as a center.
