Early Life and Education

Rafael Tadevosovich Shakhbazyan was born on June 23, 1930, in Yerevan, Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1943, he began working as a laborer in Yerevan's footwear factory. In 1952, he graduated from the Yerevan Technical School of Light Industry and moved to Moscow to study at the Moscow Technological Institute.

Industrial Career

While pursuing his studies in Moscow, Shakhbazyan worked at the Moscow Footwear Factory, where he rose through the ranks from master to chief engineer. In 1959, he became the director of the factory. In 1961, he returned to Yerevan and assumed the position of general director of the Shahumyan Leather Production Association.

Governmental Roles

Shakhbazyan served as the chairman of Armenia's state committee for gasification. From 1983 to 1990, he was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR. In 1990, he became Minister of Food and Grain Products of Armenia, and later served as acting Minister of Agriculture.

Inventions and Accolades

Shakhbazyan was credited with 26 inventions. He received the Orders of the Badge of Honor, Friendship of Peoples, and twice the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
