Biography of Raimond van der Gouw
Early Career at Go Ahead EaglesRaimond van der Gouw began his professional career with Go Ahead Eagles, rising through their youth academy. He made his senior debut in 1985 and spent several seasons with the club, experiencing both success and relegation from the Eredivisie.
Triumphs with Vitesse
In 1988, van der Gouw joined Vitesse. He played a pivotal role in their promotion to the Eredivisie, winning the Eerstedivisie title in 1988/89. The following season, Vitesse secured a third-place finish in the Eredivisie, qualifying for the UEFA Cup for the first time. They also reached the final of the KNVB Cup.
Move to Manchester United
Van der Gouw's exceptional performances caught the attention of Manchester United, and he signed for the English giants in 1996 for £500,000. He made his debut against Aston Villa in September 1996 with a clean sheet. In 1997, he stepped into the limelight when Peter Schmeichel was injured before the Champions League semi-final against Borussia Dortmund, making crucial saves despite the Red Devils' loss.
Premier League Champion and Mentor
The 1999/2000 season proved to be van der Gouw's most successful at Manchester United. After Schmeichel's departure, he became Ferguson's first-choice goalkeeper and played a key part in the club's Premier League triumph. Despite the arrival of Fabien Barthez and Roy Carroll, van der Gouw remained an influential figure in the dressing room.
Brief Stints at West Ham, RKC Waalwijk, and AGOVV Apeldoorn
After failing to secure regular game time in his final season at United, van der Gouw moved to West Ham United as David James's backup. However, he returned to the Netherlands without making any league appearances. He then signed for RKC Waalwijk and AGOVV Apeldoorn, where he scored his only professional goal in his farewell match before retiring.
Coaching Career
In 2007, van der Gouw joined his former Manchester United teammate Roy Keane at Sunderland as a goalkeeping coach. After two seasons, he returned to Vitesse in the same role.
