Early Life and EducationRakuten Kitazawa, born Yasuji Kitazawa on July 20, 1876, in Omiya, Saitama Prefecture, is widely regarded as the father of contemporary manga. He mastered both Western and Japanese art forms, studying Western painting under Ono Yukichiko and Nihonga under Inoue Shunsui.
Influence of American Comics
In 1895, Kitazawa contributed to the American magazine "Box of Curios." Inspired by American comics like "Katzenjammer Kids" and "Yellow Kid," he created his series, which garnered significant attention during that era.
Tokyo Puck and Influence on Manga Artists
In 1905, Kitazawa founded his own magazine, "Tokyo Puck," named after the American publication "Puck." Tokyo Puck was translated into English and Chinese and distributed beyond Japan to China and the Korean Peninsula. Kitazawa played a crucial role in nurturing young animators and manga artists, including Shimokawa Hekoten, who created Japan's first professional animated film. His manga significantly influenced the work of Osamu Tezuka, the "God of Manga."
International Recognition and Legacy
In 1929, upon the recommendation of the French ambassador, Kitazawa held a private exhibition in Paris, where he was honored with the Legion of Honor. Kitazawa's contributions to manga have left an indelible mark on the art form, earning him the title of "the father of modern manga."
