Wolfgang Baur: A Pioneer in Role-Playing Game Design
Early Life and EducationWolfgang Baur was born in 1968 in a suburb of Chicago. He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois and later enrolled in Cornell University's graduate program in biochemistry and molecular biology, aiming to embark on an academic career.
Shift to Game Design
In 1991, Baur's academic funding fell through, prompting him to accept a temporary position as assistant editor for Barbara Young at Dragon magazine. This marked a turning point in his career. "By the time I was up for renewal, I didn't want to go back," he recalled. "I was writing for Dragon Adventures and Iron Crown, and it was a good way to get my foot in the door of an industry I enjoyed."
TSR Projects
Baur contributed to various projects at TSR, Inc. as a designer or editor. These included the Planescape setting (specifically the Planes of Law and Planes of Chaos box sets), the Al-Qadim setting (Secrets of the Lamp and Assassin Mountain supplements), and the Birthright setting (Warlock of the Stonecrowns module). He also edited the StarDrive setting for TSR's Alternity role-playing game and the Doom of Daggerdale module for the Forgotten Realms setting in the second edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.
Later Career
Wolfgang Baur went on to work for Open Design LLC, a graphic design studio, and served as editor-in-chief of the quarterly publication Kobold Quarterly. He received the Diana Jones Award for Excellence in Gaming in 2008. Kobold Quarterly and Open Design won five ENnie Awards in 2009.
Continued Contributions
Baur remains active in the RPG community, contributing his writing talents beyond his primary roles. He is a member of the writing group Alliterates and serves on the judging panel for the RPG Superstar game design competition. Throughout his career, Wolfgang Baur has made significant contributions to the role-playing game industry, shaping the landscape of tabletop gaming and fostering the growth of the hobby.
