Thomas Armat: An American Mechanic and Inventor
Early Life and EducationThomas Armat, an American mechanic and inventor, was born in Richmond, Virginia. He studied at the Mechanics' Institute in his hometown before moving to Washington, D.C., where he met Charles Francis Jenkins. Together, they embarked on a quest to develop a new motion picture projector.
Development of the Kinetoscope
Inspired by the intermittent movement system patented by Georges Demenÿ in 1893, Jenkins and Armat created a projector that incorporated the innovative "Latham loop." This additional loop of film reduced tension and wear on the film. The first public demonstration of their invention, dubbed the "Phantoscope," took place in Atlanta in September 1895.
Dispute over Patents and Sale to Edison
After a successful public reception, Jenkins and Armat clashed over patent rights. Armat ultimately secured the patent and later sold it to Thomas Edison, who marketed the device as the "Kinetoscope." The Kinetoscope gained significant popularity, becoming a staple of public screenings in New York City and beyond.
Continued Development and Accolades
Armat continued to refine his invention while working for Edison, focusing on precision in the movement mechanism. His innovations paralleled those of other inventors, such as Oskar Messter, Max Griewe, and Robert William Paul. In 1947, Armat and three other industry pioneers received a special award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizing their contributions to the film industry.
Legacy and Recognition
Thomas Armat passed away on September 30, 1948. In 2011, he was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, a testament to his pioneering role in the development of modern cinema.
