Early Life and Comedy Beginnings
Ralph Duren May was born on February 17, 1972, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As the youngest of four children, he spent his childhood in Clarksville, Arkansas. At the age of 16, May survived a car accident that resulted in 42 different fractures, leaving him with lifelong complications.
Inspired by Sam Kinison, May won a comedy competition at 17. Encouraged by his success, he moved to Houston to attend the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. After graduating, May relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a comedic career.
Breakthrough with "Last Comic Standing"
In 2003, May was selected for the first season of "Last Comic Standing." He placed second, earning recognition and regular appearances on shows like "The Wayne Brady Show" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." In 2005, May became the only white comedian on "The Big Black Comedy Show" and released his debut comedy album, "Just Correct."
Struggles with Obesity and Weight Loss
May struggled with obesity throughout his life, which he attributed to the car accident. By 2004, he weighed 800 pounds. He underwent gastric bypass surgery and adopted a diet that helped him shed 440 pounds.
Personal Life and Legacy
On July 3, 2005, May married comedian Lahna Turner. They had two children together, April June May and August James May. In October 2015, the couple filed for divorce, which was still in progress at the time of May's death.
