Childhood Triumph Over AdversityRalph Teetor was born in 1890 in rural Indiana. A tragic accident at the tender age of five left him permanently blind. However, Teetor steadfastly refused assistance, leading an ordinary life amidst sighted peers. His unwavering determination led him to pursue his dream of becoming an engineer.
Academic and Engineering Success
Despite the lack of specialized materials in his small town, Teetor excelled in his studies. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1912 with an engineering degree. His heightened senses, honed by his vision impairment, proved invaluable in his future endeavors. After graduation, he successfully balanced steam turbines on warships, a feat previously deemed impossible.
Birth of Cruise Control
Teetor's inspiration for cruise control stemmed from a car ride where his distracted driver caused the vehicle to decelerate. Over a decade of meticulous work culminated in the 1945 patent for "Cruise control." The device used various names until Chrysler introduced it to consumers in 1958, revolutionizing the automotive industry.
A Lifetime of Achievements
Throughout his career, Teetor remained an advocate for the blind community, insisting on equality and independence. He became president of the Society of Automotive Engineers and established the Ralph Teetor Educational Award for young engineers. Despite receiving honorary doctorates and the prestigious Automotive Hall of Fame induction, Teetor continued his inventive pursuits until his passing at the age of 91.
