Early Life and Career

Born with Vision Impairment

Ramin Ibrahimov, an Azerbaijani judoka, was born on July 2, 1978, with a severe hereditary eye condition. Yet, he actively engaged in sports before his vision began to deteriorate.

Beginning in Sambo

In 1990, Ibrahimov took up sambo, becoming a medalist and champion at European and world championships in the sport under the guidance of coach Shakhlar Mustafayev.

Transition to Judo and Successes

Inspired to Join Paralympic Team

After suffering from heavy training loads, Ibrahimov sought to join the Azerbaijani Paralympic judo team in 2006. His decision was influenced by the success of Ilham Zakiyev at the 2004 Paralympic Games.

World Championship Bronze Medal

That same year, Ibrahimov secured a bronze medal at the World Championships in Bromma, France, earning a berth at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. He trained under Tarlan Poladov for the competition.

Paralympic Debut and Breakthrough

European Champion and World Games Winner

In 2007, Ibrahimov became the European champion and the World Games winner in São Paulo. Olympic champion Nazim Huseynov and judoka Zulfiya Huseynova provided valuable support in his preparations.

Bronze Medal at Beijing 2008

At the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, Ibrahimov was a favorite in the -60kg category. However, he lost in the semifinals to Mourad Noura of Algeria, the eventual Paralympic champion. Ibrahimov rebounded to defeat Ben Quilter of Great Britain, claiming bronze.

Continued Success and Accolades

Double European Champion

Ibrahimov emerged as a double European champion in 2009. In 2011, he was recognized for his contributions to Azerbaijan's Paralympic movement, receiving the "Progress" medal.

Gold Medal at London 2012

Ibrahimov's pinnacle came at the 2012 London Paralympics. He won the gold medal by defeating a Chinese athlete in the final. His achievement earned him the "Shohrat" ("Glory") Order from the President of Azerbaijan.

Post-Paralympic Career

Silver at European Championships

In 2015, Ibrahimov secured a silver medal at the European Championships in Odivelas, Portugal. He continued to receive recognition, receiving the "Honorary Diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan" in 2016.

Participation in Rio 2016

Ibrahimov participated in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, but failed to medal. He lost in the semifinals to Sherzod Namozov of Uzbekistan and in the bronze medal match to Uuganbayar Bolormaa of Mongolia.

Coaching Role

In 2017, Ibrahimov was appointed as the coach of the Azerbaijani women's Paralympic judo team.
