Ramona Brussig: Paralympic Judo Champion

Ramona Brussig, a German judoka, is a two-time Paralympic champion and a force to be reckoned with in her sport.

Early Life and Career

Brussig was born in Leipzig with impaired vision. She began her judo training at the age of 9 in 1986. Her first major international debut was at the 1998 World Games in Madrid. Despite her sister Carmen's residence in Switzerland, they often train together and maintain a close bond. Brussig notes that they do not feel competitive due to competing in different weight classes.

Paralympic Success

Brussig made her Paralympic debut at the 2004 Athens Games, where she won gold in the up to 57 kg weight class. She went on to earn silver in Beijing 2008 and regain gold in London 2012 in the up to 52 kg weight class. In Rio 2016, she took home another silver medal.

World Dominance

Beyond her Paralympic achievements, Brussig has also earned four world titles and six European titles. Her most cherished moment, she says, was winning gold in London just 15 minutes after her sister's own gold medal victory.

Training and Support

Brussig and her sister Carmen are both seen as strong contenders for medals at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo. Their training is heavily supported by financial aid. In addition to her athletic pursuits, Brussig works for the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Sports Association in northern Germany.
