Nazim Huseynov: Olympic Champion and Judo Legend
Early Life and Sports InitiationNazim Huseynov embarked on his judo journey at the tender age of 10 in 1979, joining the youth section at the "Lokomotiv" sports society.
Youth Achievements
In 1987, Huseynov's talent shone through as he claimed first place in the USSR Youth Judo Championship, earning him the title of "Master of Sports of the USSR." He followed this up with a silver medal at the same tournament in 1988. In 1989, he became a two-time USSR Youth Judo Champion and was selected to join the USSR national team.
International Breakthrough
Huseynov's international breakthrough came in 1991 at the Budapest International Tournament. Facing French judoka F. Proderol in the final, he emerged victorious in a thrilling match and was awarded the title of "Master of Sports of International Class."
Olympic Glory
1992 proved to be a watershed year for Huseynov. The International Judo Federation recognized him as the best judoka of the year in all weight categories. This accolade was largely due to his exceptional performance at the 1992 Olympic Games. In the final, he secured a decisive victory against South Korean judoka K. Yun. This triumph marked the first Olympic medal for independent Azerbaijan and the first time the Azerbaijani flag was raised in honor of an Olympic champion.
Post-Olympic Accomplishments
Huseynov's success continued after the Olympics. In 1994, he claimed a silver medal at the European Championship in Gdańsk, Poland. In 1997, he repeated this feat at the prestigious "A" category international tournament featuring the world's top judokas.
Legacy and Recognition
In 1996, a video guide for judokas titled "101 Pure Victories" was released in Europe. Among the best throws and victories featured since the 1970s, only the techniques of Japanese judoka Kodokan and Azeri judo legend Nazim Huseynov were included three times each. For his remarkable contributions to Azerbaijan, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan awarded Huseynov the highest state honor, the Order of Glory.
