Biography of Randall Wright

Randall Wright is a Canadian economist and macroeconomist who is best known for his contributions to the theory of money and labor economics, particularly through the development of the theory of matching.

Education

Wright received his Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Manitoba in 1979. He then went on to earn his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota in 1986. In 1990, he was awarded an honorary Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Academic Career

From 1984 to 1987, Wright worked as an assistant professor at Cornell University. He then moved to the University of Pennsylvania where he became a full professor in 1994. He later obtained the named professorship of the James Joo-Jin Kim Professor of Economics. In 2009, Wright joined the economics faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also held a position at the Wisconsin School of Business' Department of Finance, Investment and Banking.

Professional Experience

In addition to his academic work, Wright has applied his expertise as a research economist at various institutions including the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, the Bank of Canada, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and the Pantheon-Assas Paris II University. In 1997, he was elected as a member of the Econometric Society.

Editorial Roles

From 1998 to 2008, Wright served as the editor of the 'International Economic Review' and from 1998 to 2000, he also edited the 'American Economic Review'.

Contributions

One of Wright's significant achievements in the field of macroeconomics is the incorporation of search theory methods into the theory of money. His collaboration with Nobuhiro Kiyotaki led to the development of the theory of matching, also known as the "theory of coordination". However, this model proved to be less practical as it relied on assumptions that were often difficult to verify in real-world applications.
