Early Life and Education

Ranganathan Madhavan was born on June 1, 1970, in Jamshedpur, India. His father was a Tamil Brahmin who worked as an executive director for an international steel company, and his mother was an employee of the Bank of India. Madhavan had a younger sister who became a software engineer.

Madhavan initially pursued a career in engineering and received a Master's degree in Electronics from Kolhapur. During this time, he also trained as a military officer, serving in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom.

Entry into Bollywood and Success in Tamil Cinema

In the mid-1990s, Madhavan started his film career with a role in the American action film "Inferno." However, his breakthrough role came in 2000 with the Tamil romantic drama "Alaipayuthey." This film established Madhavan as a romantic hero and earned him critical acclaim.

He further cemented his status in Tamil cinema with films like "Minnale" and "Kannathil Muthamittal," which showcased his versatility and range. In 2002, Madhavan received critical praise for his performance in "Run," which marked his departure from romantic roles into more complex and dramatic characters.

Crossover to Bollywood and Further Success

Madhavan made his debut in Bollywood with the romantic drama "Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein" in 2001. He continued to star in Hindi films, including "Rang De Basanti," "3 Idiots," and "Guru."

Injury and Hiatus

In 2010, Madhavan suffered a knee injury that prevented him from filming for nearly five years. During this time, however, previously filmed projects were released, including "Rang De Basanti" and "Guru."

Return to Acting and Recent Projects

Madhavan returned to acting with the sports drama "Irudhi Suttru" in 2016. He won a Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his role as a demanding boxing coach.

He continues to work in films and made his directorial debut in 2022 with "Rocketry: The Nambi Effect," which he also wrote, produced, and starred in. The film tells the true story of Indian scientist and aerospace engineer Nambi Narayanan.

Personal Life and Philanthropy

Madhavan married Sarita Birje, a former flight attendant, in 1999. They have one son named Vedant, who is a professional swimmer. Madhavan is known for his philanthropic work, contributing to disaster relief and supporting projects to fight poverty and diseases such as AIDS and leprosy.
