Early Life and Education
Franz Xaver Kiese wetter was an Austrian musicologist and historian born in Olmütz (now Olomouc, Czech Republic). He studied philosophy in Olmütz and law in Vienna.
Government and Court Roles
Kiesewetter held various positions in the Austrian state apparatus and at the imperial court. His involvement in government and courtly affairs gave him access to valuable resources and connections that would later aid his musicological pursuits.
Contribution to Viennese Musical Life
From 1816 onwards, Kiesewetter organized amateur concerts in his Vienna home dedicated primarily to vocal music from the 16th to 18th centuries. From 1821 to 1843, he served as Vice-President of the Vienna Society of Music Lovers.
Musicological Works
Kiesewetter's musicological writings significantly contributed to the field. His most notable works include:

Influence and Legacy
Kiesewetter coined the term "Netherlandish School" in his study on the contributions of the Netherlands to music. This term has since become commonplace in music scholarship.
Donation of Collection
Kiesewetter's extensive collection of antique musical scores was donated to the Vienna Imperial Library. A catalog of the collection was published in 1847.
