Rashad al-Alimi: A Profile of Yemen's Current Leader
Early Life and EducationRashad al-Alimi was born on January 15, 1954, in Al-Aalum, a village in the Taiz Governorate of Yemen. The son of Mohammad bin Ali al-Alimi, a judge, he graduated from Gamal Abdel Nasser High School in Sana'a in 1969.
Alimi earned a bachelor's degree in military science from the Kuwait Police College in 1975 and a university degree in arts from Sana'a University in 1977. He went on to pursue graduate studies in Egypt, receiving his master's and doctorate in sociology from Ain Shams University between 1984 and 1988.
Political Career
A member of the General People's Congress party, Alimi served as Minister of Interior from 2001 to 2008. In May 2008, he became Chairman of the Supreme Security Committee and Deputy Prime Minister for Defense and Security. He was also a member of the Yemeni Conference on National Dialogue and an advisor to President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi in 2014.
Post-2011 Uprising
During the Battle of Sana'a in 2011, Alimi and former President Ali Abdullah Saleh were injured in an attack on the Al-Nahdin Mosque in the Presidential Palace. He received medical treatment in Saudi Arabia and Germany before returning to Sana'a in 2012. However, he fled the city again in 2015 as a result of the Houthi takeover of Yemen and took up residence in Saudi Arabia.
Rise to Presidency
On April 7, 2022, Alimi was appointed Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, a body vested with the powers of Yemen's president, by decree from Hadi. Sources in the Yemeni and Saudi Arabian governments indicated that Saudi Arabia, where Hadi had been residing, pressured him to cede power to Alimi.
