Early Life and Education

Dr. Elmar Shollan was born on June 27, 1980, in Imishli, Azerbaijan, to Farhad Mammadov, a physicist, and Afshan Mammadova, a healthcare professional. From 1987 to 1993, he attended secondary school in Baku, Azerbaijan. In 1993, he enrolled in the prestigious Gabibbek Mahmudbeyov lyceum. He graduated in 1997 and entered the Azerbaijan Medical University, where he studied medicine from 1997 to 2003. During his time there, he conducted research and published papers on urinary tract infections and surgical techniques.

Residency and Specialization

Dr. Shollan began his residency in urology at Ege University in Turkey in 2003. He spent six years there, specializing in various aspects of urological surgery, including uro-oncology, andrology, and laparoscopic urology. He published several scientific articles in international journals during this period. In 2009, he received his diploma as a urologist from the Turkish Ministry of Health.

Return to Azerbaijan

Upon his return to his home country, Dr. Shollan joined the Central Hospital of Oil Workers in 2009. He introduced uro-oncological, reconstructive, and andrological surgeries into the hospital's practice. In 2010, he became the official representative of the International Young Urologists Association in Azerbaijan.

Pioneering Laparoscopic Urology

In 2011, Dr. Shollan performed the first laparoscopic urological surgery in Azerbaijan, removing a kidney. He underwent extensive training in robotic urological surgery and kidney transplantation at Yonsei University in South Korea. In 2012, he presented his work on laparoscopic urology at the 30th International Congress of Endourology.

Academic Achievements

Dr. Shollan received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in medicine from the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. He completed experimental microsurgery courses in Turkey in 2014 and obtained international quality certification (JCI) for the Department of Kidney Diseases and Transplantation in 2019. He is also a member-researcher of the American Urological Association.

Kidney Transplantation and Leadership

Dr. Shollan established the Department of Kidney Diseases and Transplantation at the Republican Diagnostic Center in 2017. He became the head of the center and began performing kidney transplant surgeries. In 2018, he completed a fellowship program in kidney transplantation at Yonsei University. In 2019, he was appointed chief specialist in kidney transplantation for the Azerbaijani Ministry of Health and established the Association of Kidney Transplant Specialists. He has authored over 90 scientific publications and is currently working on a doctoral dissertation on the diagnosis of interstitial cystitis.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Shollan has received numerous awards for his contributions to healthcare, including the "Excellent Healthcare Professional" badge from the Ministry of Health in 2016, a certificate of honor from the Ministry of Health in 2018, and the award of the Foundation for the Promotion of Moral Values of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2019.
