Nikolai Alekseyevich Lopatkin, a renowned Russian urologist and academician, has made significant contributions to the field of urology. His groundbreaking research and practical innovations have earned him numerous accolades, including the title of Hero of Socialist Labor, three State Prizes of the USSR (1971, 1984, 1990), the Prize of the Council of Ministers of the USSR (1981), and the title of Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.

Early Life and Education

Nikolai Lopatkin was born in Moscow on February 18, 1924, to a family of physicians. In 1928, the family relocated to Yelets, where Lopatkin completed his primary and secondary education. After returning to Moscow in 1937, he completed his secondary education and entered the 1st Moscow Medical Institute named after I.M. Sechenov in 1942. In 1943, he transferred to the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov, where he graduated in 1947 from the Faculty of Medicine.

Urology Career

After graduating, Lopatkin pursued postgraduate studies in the Department of Faculty Surgery at the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute, completing his residency in 1950. He was subsequently appointed Assistant Professor in the same department. In 1953, he successfully defended his PhD dissertation.

From 1958 onwards, Lopatkin held various academic positions at the Department of Urology, including Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. In 1967, he was appointed Head of the Department of Urology and Operative Nephrology, a position he held for many years. In 1959, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic of "Renal Angiography."

In 1979, Lopatkin founded the Research Institute of Urology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (NIU), where he continues to serve as Director to this day.

Scientific Contributions

As the head of the Department of Urology and Operative Nephrology and the Research Institute of Urology, Lopatkin established himself as a prominent scientist and organizer of research and medical education in urology. His contributions to the field are vast and include:

Professional Involvement and Leadership

Since 1976, Lopatkin has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Urologiya." In 1972, he established the All-Union Society of Urologists of the USSR and organized four All-Union Congresses of Urologists of the USSR. He currently serves as Chairman of the All-Russian Society of Urologists and is an honorary member of various European and international urological societies.

Personal Life

Outside of his professional pursuits, Lopatkin enjoys attending theater performances, particularly at the Bolshoi Theater, the Moscow Art Theater, and the Vakhtangov Theater. He is also an avid gardener.
