Professional basketball player

Ratko Varda is a professional basketball player who currently plays for the Serbian league team 'Mega Vizura'. He has also played in the NBA for two seasons, although it can hardly be considered a particularly productive period even by the standards of the most optimistic. Afterwards, Varda moved to Europe, where he has played for various teams at an impressive rate.

Early career

Ratko Varda first became involved in basketball through the youth project of the Belgrade club 'Partizan'. However, he initially started playing basketball at the sports school of another Belgrade team, 'Crvena Zvezda'. Varda made his professional debut in the 1995-1996 season. He spent a total of six years in Belgrade's 'Partizan', partly to gain experience and partly because he was unable to meet the formal requirements to join the NBA.

NBA career

In 2001, Varda finally decided to enter the NBA draft. However, he went undrafted, but managed to earn a spot on the 'Detroit Pistons' roster before the start of the 2001-2002 season. Unfortunately, Varda's NBA career only lasted for two seasons, playing for the 'Pistons' and 'Washington Wizards'. He had limited playing time, only participating in one game for six minutes and scoring five points.

Return to Europe

In 2003, Varda returned to Europe and signed a contract with 'Union Olimpija', where he played until the end of the 2002-2003 season. In the summer of 2004, he played in the Turkish Basketball League for 'Beşiktaş', but eventually left the club towards the end of the season. Varda joined the Spanish ACB league in the 2006-2007 season, playing for 'Real Madrid'. However, his season was cut short due to a serious knee injury.

Continued career

After recovering from his injury, Varda signed a one-year contract with 'ViveMenorca' in Spain in October 2007. In August 2008, he joined the Lithuanian team 'BC Žalgiris' in Kaunas. However, he left the club in late November due to financial difficulties. Varda's complicated relationship with the club became public, as he published an open letter on the matter.

Recent years

In January 2009, Varda found a new team in the Russian basketball club 'Khimki'. By the end of 2009, he switched teams again and signed a one-month contract with the Polish team 'Asseco Prokom Gdynia'. Their collaboration extended into the following year, as Varda extended his contract until the end of the 2010-2011 season. In August 2011, he returned to 'Union Olimpija', although this time the partnership did not last long due to financial difficulties. Varda then played for the Ukrainian club 'Azovmash' before joining 'Mahram Tehran' and finally 'Radnički Kragujevac' in the 2012-2013 season.

Current team

As of July 31, 2013, Ratko Varda signed a one-year contract with the team 'Mega Vizura', where he continues to play.
