Formula Two and CART
After a lackluster Formula One stint, Bernard returned to Brazil in 1984 to participate in the South American Formula Two championship, claiming a victory in Rio de Janeiro. In 1985, he made his CART debut and achieved the highest starting position for a rookie at the Indianapolis 500 that year.
