The Woman Living Without Money
Heidemarie Schwermer, a 70-year-old German woman, is one of a handful of people in the world who have chosen to forgo the use of money. Notably, Schwermer's decision was not born out of necessity or extreme hardship. Instead, she intentionally and voluntarily embraces a life without currency, living not in the wilderness or mountains, but in Germany, primarily in the city of Dortmund.
Origins and Profession
By profession, Schwermer is a psychotherapist. Born in 1942 in Memel (formerly East Prussia, now Klaipeda), she spent around 20 years as a teacher before becoming a psychotherapist. She has two children and three grandchildren, all of whom, of course, live with money.
The Idea of Moneyless Living
Schwermer's epiphany about relinquishing money came in the mid-1990s. As a psychotherapist, she frequently encountered individuals in various crises and realized that something was amiss in a society so heavily reliant on material wealth.
The Birth of 'Gib und Nimm'
In 1994, Schwermer established an innovative exchange network dubbed 'Gib und Nimm' ('Give and Take'). The concept was simple: to facilitate an exchange of services, goods, and necessities without monetary transactions. For example, a person could receive a free haircut and, in return, offer a consultation or babysitting services. Initially designed to assist the homeless and destitute, the network gradually attracted a broader membership of seniors, the elderly, and the lonely.
Embracing a Life Without Money
As the 'Gib und Nimm' network flourished, Schwermer recognized that one could survive with minimal financial resources. Emboldened by this realization, she embarked on a daring experiment in 1996 to live an entire year without money. She terminated her rental agreement, distributed her belongings, and embarked on a new existence unburdened by currency.
Her Life Today
From 1996 to the present day, Schwermer has sustained her moneyless lifestyle. Unlike some others who have given up money, she does occasionally utilize certain technological conveniences. Notably, she possesses a mobile phone, which she acquired without ever purchasing it. She also wears eyeglasses and occasionally uses the internet. Beyond these limited concessions, her financial interactions with the world are virtually nonexistent.
Beliefs and Philosophy
Schwermer believes that wealth and happiness do not stem from material possessions. She asserts that true happiness lies in fostering a sense of community and interdependence among individuals. She emphasizes that her belongings can fit into a single suitcase, which she finds ample.
