American Cardiologist and Trans Activist
Early Life and TransitionDr. Becky Allison was born in Greenwood, Mississippi, to Errol Ward Atkinson and Mabel Blackwell Atkinson. In 1993, while living in Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. Allison transitioned to become transgender.
Medical Career
Dr. Allison graduated with honors from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson in 1971. After practicing medicine, she returned to school in 1985 to pursue cardiology, entering the field in 1987. She later moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and joined Cigna. She served as Chief of the Division of Cardiology from 1998 to 2012 while also maintaining a private practice. Phoenix Magazine recognized Dr. Allison as one of Phoenix's "Top Doctors" from 2006 to 2008.
Advocacy and Activism
In 1998, Dr. Allison founded drbecky.com, a project focused on healthcare, legal, and spiritual assistance for transgender people. The website provides a compilation of legal provisions for gender marker changes on birth certificates, a pamphlet on facial feminization surgery by Douglas Ousterhout, and a critique of J. Michael Bailey's controversial book "The Man Who Would Be Queen." Dr. Allison's website is frequently cited in healthcare guidelines for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Dr. Allison was instrumental in developing AMA Resolution 22, "Removing Financial Barriers to Care for Transgender Patients." She is also an active participant in Soulforce and formerly organized the annual Phoenix Transgender Day of Remembrance with her partner, Margo Shaffer.
