Early Life and Influences
Rebecca Romijn was born on November 6, 1972, in the university town of Berkeley, California. Her father, a Dutch immigrant, ran a furniture business, while her mother taught English. After her parents' divorce when she was seven, Rebecca remained with her mother and had limited contact with her father.
Growing up in an intellectual and bohemian household, Rebecca was exposed to the ideals of the hippie movement. She found solace in music, feeling alienated from her peers due to her height, which earned her the nickname "jolly blonde giant."
College and Modeling Career
Attending the University of California, Santa Cruz, Rebecca pursued a degree in music. However, financial struggles and a sense of isolation led her to leave after two years. In 1995, through a friend's connection, she entered the modeling industry.
Rebecca's striking blonde features and tall frame quickly propelled her to success. She traveled the globe for shoots in cities like Milan, London, and Tokyo. She spent two and a half years in Paris, modeling for Elle magazine and Christian Dior. Her work graced the pages of publications such as Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, FHM, and GQ.
Transition to Acting
While modeling, Rebecca yearned to become an actress. She attended an acting studio in New York and made her on-screen debut in 1999 with a cameo appearance in "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me."
Her breakthrough role came in 2000 as the shape-shifting mutant Mystique in the superhero film "X-Men." The role required extensive makeup, taking up to eight hours to apply. Despite the film's commercial success, it was not until she worked with renowned director Brian De Palma on "Femme Fatale" that her acting abilities were fully realized.
Career Highlights
In "Femme Fatale," De Palma cast Rebecca as Laura Ash, a femme fatale of formidable beauty and danger. She received critical acclaim for her portrayal, with Antonio Banderas, her co-star, praising her "ironic look at things."
Rebecca's subsequent films include "X2: X-Men United," "Hellboy," "The Punisher," and "X-Men: The Last Stand." She has also made guest appearances on television shows like "Friends" and "Ugly Betty."
Personal Life
In 1998, Rebecca married actor John Stamos. They divorced in 2005. In 2007, she began a relationship with actor Jerry O'Connell, whom she later married in 2007. They have twin daughters. Rebecca continues to be an active actress and philanthropist, supporting various charities and foundations.
