Rebecca Liljeberg was born on May 13, 1981, in Sweden. Her mother, Kristine, was 18 years old at the time, and her father, Jurki, was 24 years old. Rebecca is half Finnish and half Swedish. She has a brother named Samuel, born in 1992, and two sisters - Osa (born in 1993) and Claudia (born in 1988).

Rebecca's childhood was spent in small towns near Stockholm, such as Elvsjo, Bagarmossen, Nynashamn, and Mariefred. When she was 9 years old, a casting group came to her school looking for children to appear in the TV series "Sunes jul" (Christmas with the Sunes). Rebecca caught their attention and after getting her parents' approval, she was cast as Sophie Blickst. This marked her debut in the film industry. While this first experience didn't drastically change Rebecca's life, it certainly had an impact on her.

At the age of 12, she began working in an amateur theater group called "Nynashamns Ungdoms Teater" (Nynashamn Youth Theater), and at 15, she left home to live independently in Stockholm. Rebecca continued working in theater until 1997. That same year, she played the lead role of Nina in the short film "Narkontakt."

Breakthrough with "Show Me Love"

Rebecca Liljeberg's breakthrough came in 1998 when she starred in the Swedish melodrama "Show Me Love" directed by Lukas Moodysson. The film was released under the English title "Show Me Love" in most countries, but its original Swedish title, "Fucking Amal," more accurately reflects the essence of the story. The film revolves around teenagers aged 14 to 17 living in a small Swedish town called Amal. Rebecca played the role of Agnes, a quiet and lonely eighth-grader who secretly falls in love with her beautiful and popular classmate Elin (Alexandra Dahlstrom). The film received critical acclaim for its delicate portrayal of a lesbian relationship, avoiding explicitness and vulgarity.

"Show Me Love" was a huge success, receiving numerous awards at various film festivals, including four Golden Beetles from the Swedish National Film Academy, the Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Grand Prize of Gothenburg, and the Swedish Film of the Year Award from the Swedish Film Critics Association. Both Rebecca Liljeberg and Alexandra Dahlstrom won the Golden Beetle for Best Actress. The film also gained a large following worldwide, including in Russia.

In 2002, Rebecca Liljeberg made her debut in an English-language film, "Bear's Kiss," directed by Sergei Bodrov Sr. The director had seen "Show Me Love" and was impressed with Rebecca's performance. At the time, Rebecca had decided not to pursue a career in acting and was planning to become a doctor. However, she accepted Sergei Bodrov's offer because she loved the script and was intrigued by the opportunity to explore the world of the circus, which had always been her childhood dream.

In "Bear's Kiss," Rebecca played the role of Lola, an actress in a traveling circus. Lola is a lonely person, much like Agnes from "Show Me Love," and her only close companion is a bear cub named Misha. Lola's love for Misha is so strong that it turns him into a human being. However, in a tragic turn of events, Misha eventually becomes a bear again, this time forever.

"Bear's Kiss" was a beautiful and lyrical film that featured an international cast, including Joachim Krol, Ariadna Gil, Silvio Orlando, Keith Allen, Anne-Marie Pisani, Maurizio Donadoni, Alexander Bashirov, and Marcela Musso. The on-screen chemistry between Rebecca Liljeberg and Sergei Bodrov was exceptional. The film relied heavily on the expressive facial expressions of the actors, as there were few dialogues.
