Reda Kateb was born on January 15, 1977, in Ivry-sur-Seine, near Paris, France. His father, Malek Kateb, was an Algerian actor and director who had founded the Algerian National Theater with his cousin Mustapha before immigrating to France due to the Algerian War. His mother, Françoise, was a nurse with Czech, Spanish, and Italian ancestry.

Growing up, Reda was heavily influenced by his father's passion for acting. From the age of eight, he began taking drama lessons and performing in plays, often directed by his father. He later obtained diplomas in literature and film mechanics.

Struggles in the Film Industry

Despite his theatrical experience, Kateb struggled to break into the film industry. He faced prejudice due to his Algerian heritage, being perceived as either too foreign for French productions or insufficiently Arab for Algerian ones.
