Early Life and Career

- Redmond Barry was born in County Cork, Ireland, to General Henry Green Barry and Phoebe Barry.

- He attended military school in Kent and Trinity College Dublin before being called to the Irish Bar in 1838.

Emigration to Australia and Legal Appointments

- Barry emigrated to Australia in 1839 and settled in Melbourne.

- He served as Special Commissioner of the Courts of Request and became Chief Crown Solicitor of the newly formed colony of Victoria in 1851.

- In 1852, he was appointed Supreme Court Judge of Victoria.

Contributions to Victorian Society

- Barry advocated for government funding for social welfare, particularly education.

- He helped establish the Melbourne Hospital (1848), the University of Melbourne (1853), and the State Library of Victoria (1854).

- He served as the first Chancellor of the University of Melbourne and President of the State Library of Victoria.

The Eureka Stockade Trial

- Barry presided over the Eureka Stockade treason trial in 1855, resulting in the acquittal of 13 miners.

International Representation and Honors

- Barry represented Victoria at the London International Exhibition in 1862 and the Philadelphia Exposition in 1876.

- He was knighted in 1860 and became a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) in 1877.

The Kelly Outbreak

- Barry presided over the trials of Mrs. Ellen Kelly and other individuals accused of aiding and abetting the Kelly Gang in 1878.

- His sentencing of Mrs. Kelly to hard labor without sufficient evidence marked the beginning of the Kelly Outbreak.

- Barry also presided over the final trial of Ned Kelly in 1880.

Death and Legacy
- Barry died in 1880 from pneumonia and a carbuncle on his neck.
- The State Library of Victoria's reading room is named in his honor.
