In 2005, Bush was awarded the Heisman Trophy and named the College Football Player of the Year by the Associated Press. Despite only appearing in fourteen out of the thirty-nine games played by the university team, he managed to accumulate 6,541 rushing yards, making him the tenth highest in the history of Division I-A NCAA.

On January 12, 2006, Bush decided to forgo his college career and enter the NFL draft. It was widely predicted that he would be the first overall pick by the Houston Texans. However, the Texans signed a contract with Mario Williams from North Carolina State University, and Bush was instead selected by the New Orleans Saints. Many analysts considered this move by the Texans as one of the biggest mistakes in NFL draft history.

Shortly before the draft, on April 26, 2006, Bush signed a contract with Adidas. The fans of New Orleans warmly welcomed their new player. Bush was deeply touched by the reception, especially considering the city was still recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. He personally donated a considerable amount of money towards the recovery efforts and called on his fellow athletes to follow suit.

In his rookie season, Bush had a mixed performance, with both successes and failures. Despite this, he proved to be a valuable asset to the team. At the end of the season, he was fined $5,000 for taunting an opposing player, but he paid the fine and issued an apology.

The 2007 season began with a defeat against the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl, followed by another loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Throughout the season, Bush scored six touchdowns and rushed for 581 yards. He missed the last four games due to a partially torn ligament.

In the following year, Bush demonstrated significant improvement. However, on October 19, 2008, he injured his meniscus in his left knee during a game against the Carolina Panthers. He underwent surgery the next day, but remained out of action until November 30. On December 11, he suffered another knee injury, which required a longer recovery period.

Knee problems continued to bother Bush in 2009, leading him to temporarily suspend his training in August. However, he returned to form by the regular season and delivered impressive performances in most of the games he played. One of the highlights of his career was a game against the Arizona Cardinals on January 16, 2010.
