Biography of Rashad Mendenhall

Early Life and High School Career

Rashad Mendenhall, whose full name is Rashard Jamal Mendenhall, was born in 1987 in Skokie, Illinois. He attended Niles West High School, where he played football as a running back. Mendenhall was not only the best player in his school but also recognized as the top recruit in the state by Scout.com. Over his three seasons with the high school team, he accumulated over 4,500 yards and scored 54 touchdowns.

College Career

Following his graduation from high school, Mendenhall enrolled at the University of Illinois, where he immediately joined the football team. In his freshman season, he gained several hundred yards and scored two touchdowns. As a sophomore in the 2006 season, he nearly tripled his previous year's performance, earning five touchdowns. Mendenhall's final season with the university team proved to be his most successful, as he rushed for 1,680 yards and scored at least 17 touchdowns. During his five years at the university, Mendenhall received media attention, with his photograph appearing on the cover of 'Sporting News High School Football Magazine' and making an appearance on 'The Best Damn Sports Show Period' in 2008.

Professional Career

Prior to the 2008 NFL Draft, Mendenhall set a record in the 40-yard dash and met with coaches from various NFL teams. Ultimately, he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round as the 23rd overall pick. Even before the start of his rookie season, Mendenhall was included in the list of the league's top 30 running backs. On July 25, 2008, it was reported that Mendenhall signed a five-year contract worth nearly $13 million with the Steelers.

Challenges and Achievements

Mendenhall faced difficulties in his first games as he lost the ball twice in a game against the Minnesota Vikings. This led to teasing from his teammates, with Hines Ward even throwing the ball into Mendenhall's locker accompanied by a note stating, "If you can take the ball from Mendenhall, he owes you $100." However, after several training sessions with the running back coach, Mendenhall overcame the problem, although he had to carry the ball with him for the following weeks. His rookie season was not particularly successful, as he did not score a touchdown and rushed for just over 150 yards.
