Regimantas Adomaitis is a Soviet Lithuanian actor of theater and cinema. He was born on January 31, 1937 in Siauliai, Lithuania. His father, Vaitskus Adomaitis, was born in 1898, and his mother, Kotrine Adomaite, was born in 1905. He is married to Eugenia Baerite, a singer at the Vilnius Philharmonic. They have three children: Vitautas (born in 1972), Gediminas (born in 1977), and Mindaugas (born in 1980).
Adomaitis completed his studies at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Vilnius State University from 1954 to 1959, and then at the Acting Faculty of Vilnius Conservatory from 1958 to 1962. From 1963 to 1967, he worked at the Kaunas Drama Theater, and from 1967 to the present day, he has been an actor at the National Academic Drama Theater of the Republic of Lithuania. His first teacher in the theater was G. Vantsyavichus, and his first role in a film was directed by V. Zhalakyavichus.
Adomaitis has played a wide variety of roles in theater and cinema, with his characters often marked by a mix of comedy and tragedy. His background as a physicist has taught him logical thinking and the ability to analyze phenomena, which stimulated his interest in the human soul and the essence of human behavior. Adomaitis always had his own point of view regarding the characters he portrayed and sought to find his own method of embodying them. He would sometimes merge with his character, while other times he would distance himself and observe them from the outside, justifying or condemning their actions. He was never attracted to symmetric, normative characters; instead, he was drawn to moments of tragic truth.
Some of his notable roles include Donatas in the film "Nobody Wanted to Die" (1965), Edmond in "King Lear" (1971), Traps in "Accident" (1974), and Franz in "Volts" (1973). Adomaitis has also performed in various plays, such as "The Hermits of Altona" and "Mindaugas," where he brought the stories closer to the audience. He has received critical acclaim for his performances in plays by authors such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Henrik Ibsen, and Albert Camus.
Apart from his theater work, Adomaitis has appeared in numerous films directed by acclaimed filmmakers such as Grigori Kozintsev, Aloyzas Gricius, and Algimantas Vabalas. He has also acted in German films, earning praise for his performances in "Volts" and "The Bride."
Throughout his career, Adomaitis has received numerous awards and honors, including the titles of People's Artist of the USSR (1985) and People's Artist of the Lithuanian SSR (1979). He has also been awarded the Order of Gediminas and the State Prize of the Lithuanian SSR.
In his free time, Adomaitis enjoys tending to his garden and beekeeping at his country house near Vilnius. He currently resides and works in Vilnius.
