Early Life and Career
Willy and his twin brother, René, were born on the 25th of October, 1952, in the Netherlands. They both developed a passion for football from a young age and joined the youth academy of their local club, Sparta Rotterdam. In 1970, at the age of 17, Willy made his senior debut for the club.
International Stardom
In 1973, Willy earned his first cap for the Dutch national team. He went on to play a crucial role in the team that reached the final of the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. The following year, he helped the Netherlands win the UEFA European Championship. In 1978, Willy and his team made it to the final of the World Cup once again, but this time they lost to Argentina.
Club Success
Throughout his club career, Willy played for several top-flight teams in the Netherlands and abroad. He won the Eredivisie title with Feyenoord in 1978 and 1980, and the Belgian First Division title with Anderlecht in 1981. He also played for teams such as PSV Eindhoven and Paris Saint-Germain.
Recognition and Legacy
Willy's exceptional talent and contributions to football earned him numerous accolades. In 2004, he was included in Pelé's list of the 125 greatest living footballers. He also won the Golden Boot as the top scorer in the 1978–79 Eredivisie season. Willy's impact on the game is undeniable, and he remains one of the most respected Dutch footballers of all time.
