Early Life
Born on June 18, 1924, in Poland, Renia was the eldest daughter of Bernard Spiegel and Rosa Maria Leszczyńska. She had a younger sister, Ariana, who became a renowned child actor.
Discord and Displacement
After the outbreak of World War II, Renia and Ariana were separated from their mother and lived with their grandparents in Przemyśl. The war intensified, and the sisters faced hardships and fear.
Love and Refuge
In 1940, Renia began a romantic relationship with Zygmunt Schwarzer, a young Jewish man. As the persecution of Jews escalated, Schwarzer smuggled Renia and his parents out of the ghetto and hid them in the attic of his uncle's house.
Tragedy Strikes
On July 30, 1942, an informer led Nazi police to the hiding place. Renia, Schwarzer's parents, and several others were executed during a brutal raid.
The Diary: A Window into History
Renia began keeping a diary at age 15, filling over 700 pages with her innermost thoughts, experiences, and observations. The diary provides a powerful and personal account of life during the Holocaust.
Rediscovery and Legacy
After the war, the diary was handed down through Renia's family. In 2012, it was translated into English for the first time. It has since been the subject of a documentary film and has been published internationally.
