Biography of Ricardo Lagos

Ricardo Lagos was born on March 2, 1938, into a middle-class family. His father, Florian Lagos, passed away when Ricardo was just eight years old. His mother, Emma Escobar, a former teacher, is now 103 years old and is responsible for instilling in him his democratic views from a young age.

Education and Early Career

Ricardo Lagos studied law at the University of Chile, where he obtained a law degree. He then continued his education in the United States, where he defended his doctoral dissertation in economics.

Political Career

In 1971, four years after divorcing his first wife, Ricardo Lagos married Luisa Duran. They have five children together.

Upon returning from the United States, Lagos assumed the position of Secretary-General of the University of Chile and soon caught the attention of the country's president, Salvador Allende. Shortly before Allende's death, he appointed Lagos as ambassador to the Soviet Union. However, Lagos never had the opportunity to take up this position as he hastily left for Argentina and then the United States after a military coup.

Lagos returned to his homeland in 1984 and two years later, he became the leader of the opposition "Democratic Alliance" against Pinochet. Following an assassination attempt on the dictator in September 1986, in which five of his bodyguards were killed, Lagos was imprisoned for three weeks. In 1987, he became the leader of the "Committee of Left Forces for Democratic Elections" and after the 1988 plebiscite, which removed Pinochet from power, he became one of the founders of the Party for Democracy.

Presidency

Ricardo Lagos served as the President of Chile from 2000 to 2006. During his presidency, he focused on social and economic reforms, including improving education and healthcare systems, reducing poverty, and promoting sustainable development. He also played a key role in strengthening Chile's international relations and ensuring economic stability.

Overall, Ricardo Lagos's career has been marked by his commitment to democratic values, his dedication to social progress, and his tireless efforts to improve the lives of the people of Chile.
