Early Life and EducationRicardo Lagos Escobar was born on March 2, 1938, in Santiago, Chile. He pursued a law degree at the University of Chile and later obtained a doctorate in economics from Duke University in the United States.
Career in International Organizations
Prior to his political career, Lagos worked for the United Nations in New York and then joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 1978 after returning to Chile.
Political Affiliations
In 1961, Lagos joined the Radical Party, but withdrew in the 1970s, declaring himself an "independent leftist." In the mid-1980s, he emerged as a prominent leader of the democratic opposition, known as the Coalition of Parties for Democracy (CPD).
Ministerial Positions
Lagos held several ministerial positions in the post-Pinochet era. From 1990 to 1992, he served as Minister of Education, and from 1994 to 1998, he was Minister of Public Works.
