Early Life and Education
Meera Murjani was born and raised in the United States to an Indian immigrant family. She pursued her higher education at the University of California, Davis, where she majored in Communications and graduated in 2011.
Dance Background
For the past 25 years, Murjani has trained as a dance student with Srimati Anuradha Nag (School of Kathak Tarangini). She has honed her skills in various Western and Indian dance styles and has stated her unwavering passion for dancing.
Career Beginnings
In her early years as an actress, Murjani made guest appearances on television shows such as "The Mindy Project" (created by Mindy Kaling), "NCIS: Los Angeles," and "9-1-1." She also provided voiceover work for the 2018 role-playing video game Fallout 76.
Breakthrough with "Never Have I Ever"
Since 2020, Murjani has gained recognition for her role as Kamala on the Netflix original series "Never Have I Ever," also co-created by Kaling. She landed the role through an open casting call. In the series, she plays Kamala Nandiwadal, Devi's cousin and a graduate student in biology at Caltech.
Murjani has used her role as Kamala to shed light on the experiences of women of color in STEM. She has spoken about the systemic issue of their names being removed from research papers and the importance of portraying these challenges in a comedic context.
Upcoming Projects
Murjani's upcoming film, "Broken Drawer" directed by Rippin Sindher, is currently in post-production. The film is based on the true story of a young Sikh mother who was murdered while working at her family's store in rural California. Murjani shares a connection with the protagonist as an Indian woman herself.
