Richard Ackermann: German Philologist, Literary Scholar, and Writer
Richard Ackermann was a German philologist, literary scholar, and writer. He attended gymnasium in Hof and Bayreuth until 1875. He continued his education at Erlangen University, where he studied classical philology for three semesters. He then studied philology in Munich and Würzburg before working as a private tutor. In 1882, after teaching English and French at a trade school in Marktbrayt for a semester, he passed his university exams in both languages. In the autumn of 1889, he passed his exams in philology. He worked in Marktbrayt until the autumn of 1886, then became a teacher in Bayreuth from March 1887. In 1889, he moved to Bamberg, where he published a critical edition of Henry Chettle's tragedy "The Tragedy of Hoffman" in 1894.
Contributions and Works
One of Ackermann's notable works is "Lord Byron: His Life, His Works, His Influence on German Literature" (German: Lord Byron. Sein Leben, seine Werke, sein Einfluss auf die deutsche Litteratur; Heidelberg, 1901), in which he developed Byron's image as a "superhuman" figure, a titan who was too grand for the world around him and ultimately perished due to this mismatch.
He also published two books about Percy Bysshe Shelley, namely "Sources, Prototypes, and Plots of Shelley's Poetic Works: 'Alastor,' 'Epipsychidion,' 'Adonais,' 'Hellas'" (German: Quellen, Vorbilder, Stoffe zu Shelley's Poetischen Werken: Alastor; Epipsychidion; Adonais; Hellas; 1890) and "Lucan's Pharsalia in Shelley's Poems" (German: Lucans Pharsalia in den Dichtungen Schelley’s; Zweibrücken, 1895-1896). He also wrote "A Brief History of English Literature" (German: Kurze Geschichte der englischen Literatur; 1902), "The Pedagogical-Didactic Seminar for Neophilologists" (German: Das P?dagogisch-Didaktische Seminar f?r Neuphilologen; 1913), and other works.
