The Enigmatic Richard Paul Ashcroft: A Biography
Early LifeRichard Paul Ashcroft was born in 1971 in Billinge, England. He was the first and only son in the family, growing up with two younger sisters. When Richard was 11 years old, his father Frank, who worked as a clerk, suddenly passed away. His mother Margaret, who worked as a hairdresser, soon remarried, and Richard gained a stepfather who was a member of the secret mystical society, the Rosicrucians.
Early Passion for Football
Richard was not particularly enthusiastic about academics and was more interested in playing football. He played for the football club 'Wigan Athletic' and even dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. However, as he grew older, his love for music began to overshadow his passion for sports.
Formation of The Verve
During his time in school, Richard met his future bandmates Simon Jones, Peter Salisbury, and Simon Tong. Later, at Winstanley College, he met Nick McCabe. This lineup became the band 'The Verve,' formed in the 1990s, which gained immense popularity in England. The band played psychedelic rock and became known for their controversial relationship with drugs. They released several albums that captivated the minds of dreamy English fans of psychedelic rock.
The Verve's Disbandment and Solo Projects

United Nations of Sound
In 2010, Richard announced the formation of a new project called 'United Nations of Sound,' with an ambiguous name. This time, Richard decided to play in a completely different style, with their first album 'Redemption' leaning towards hip-hop. The group's music video for the song 'Are You Ready' was also released in the same year. 'United Nations of Sound' had a good chance of replicating the success of Richard's previous band.
Recent Years
Richard has not been very active in the mainstream music scene since The Verve's breakup. Occasionally, new compositions by Richard surfaced online, but he remained somewhat on the fringes. In recent times, an interesting item appeared on eBay - Richard's badge from a British music festival in support of Japan. The proceeds from the sale of this item were donated to the British Red Cross to aid the Japanese victims.
