Biography of Bill Berry

Bill Berry, whose full name is William Thomas Berry, was born on July 31, 1958, in Duluth, Minnesota. He grew up as the fifth child in the family of Don and Anna Berry. When Bill was three years old, the family moved to the suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and seven years later they relocated to Sandusky, Ohio. However, it was only after moving to Georgia in 1972 that Bill truly felt at home.

At Mount de Sales Academy, Bill met Mike Mills, with whom he played in several school bands. They later became friends with Michael Stipe and Peter Buck, and together they formed the band known as 'R.E.M.'. Over the next 17 years, the group not only became famous but also achieved legendary status in the American music scene. Their albums sold out within days, topped charts, and achieved both gold and platinum status not only in America but also worldwide.

Interestingly, Berry was not only the drummer of the band but also actively participated in songwriting. Some of his notable contributions include hits such as 'Everybody Hurts' and 'Man on the Moon' from the album 'Automatic for the People', as well as 'Perfect Circle', 'Driver 8', and 'Can't Get There from Here' from other studio works of the group.

In 1995, while performing with 'R.E.M.', Bill collapsed on stage but returned to the group after a few months of rehabilitation. Unfortunately, at the time of his return, he admitted that he lacked the energy and drive to continue working. These are known as the essential components of the musical process, without which music becomes merely a combination of notes. In an interview, he confessed that he had not argued with other band members; it was simply time for a change.

Soon after leaving the stage, Bill moved to his farm in Farmington, Georgia. Over the following years, he occasionally met with his 'R.E.M.' bandmates on stage and in the studio but refused to resume studio and concert activities, assuring all fans that he could no longer endure it. He last performed with the group at an event celebrating 'R.E.M.'s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
