Richard Bonington was an English painter and illustrator born on October 25, 1801, in Arnold, near Nottingham. Although he was born in England, he spent the majority of his short life in France.

Early Life and Education

Bonington's parents resisted his choice to pursue a career in art, which pushed him to leave for Paris in 1817. There, he studied watercolor technique under Louis Francia, a pupil of Thomas Girtin. During his time in Paris, Bonington also studied under A.Gros and became friends with Eugene Delacroix. He briefly attended classes at the School of Fine Arts and then embarked on a trip to Normandy.

Travels and Achievements

For the last eight years of his life, Bonington traveled extensively throughout Northern Europe and Italy, creating numerous sketches and studies. In 1824, his works were exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon, where he received the Royal Gold Medal.

Artistic Style and Influence

Bonington's art is known for the lightness of his brush strokes. The realism in his works is based on the precise depiction of atmospheric phenomena and the effects of sunlight. He "condensed" the details of natural phenomena he observed into graphic symbols and hints.
