Early Life and Career

Richard Jay Belzer, actor, writer, and producer, was born on August 4, 1944, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Francis and Charles Belzer, a tobacco and candy salesman. Belzer worked as a newspaper delivery boy and assisted his parents in their store during his youth. He attended multiple schools but was often expelled due to his "uncontrollable sense of humor."

Stand-Up Comedy and Television Breakthrough

Following his parents' untimely deaths, Belzer moved to New York City in the early 1970s and began performing stand-up comedy in clubs and on shows. In the mid-1970s, he made his television debut on "Saturday Night Live." His comedic success led to several film roles, including "The Groove Tube" (1974), "Fame" (1980), and "Scarface" (1983).

Television Stardom as Detective Munch

In the 1990s, Belzer transitioned to television, portraying Detective John Munch in a variety of series. Munch first appeared in "Homicide: Life on the Street," followed by guest appearances in "The X Files." Starting in 1999, he became a regular cast member of "Law & Order." Belzer continued to play Munch in numerous spin-offs and guest appearances.

Film Roles and Political Activism

Belzer also starred in films throughout his career, including Spike Lee's "Get on the Bus" (1996) and "Girl 6" (1996). As a political activist, he supported Democratic presidential candidates John Kerry (2004) and Barack Obama (2008). He authored books on stand-up comedy and paranormal phenomena.

Personal Life and Death

Belzer married three times: Gayle Ross (1966-1972), Dalia Danoch (1976-1978), and actress Harlee McBride (1985-). He was diagnosed with cancer in the mid-1980s but recovered after timely treatment. Richard Belzer passed away on February 19, 2023, at the age of 78, in his home in southwest France due to health complications.
