Augustin-François La Gothiere was a prominent French publicist, advocate, and socialist who lived during the 19th century.
Communist Beliefs
La Gothiere's communist ideas were heavily influenced by the teachings of Gracchus Babeuf and Filippo Buonarroti. He expounded his communist principles in various publications, including the journals "Egalité?" (1839) and "Fraternité?" (1841), as well as in his written works such as "Les d?jeuners de Pierre" (1841) and "De la loi sociale" (1841).
Socialist Principles
La Gothiere envisioned communism as a system where "labor is distributed according to strength, food according to needs, and education according to abilities." He advocated for state ownership of the means of production and the equitable distribution of work and resources among citizens. Labor was considered obligatory for all, while divorce was permitted.
Emphasis on Sentiment and Devotion
Despite his communist leanings, La Gothiere emphasized the importance of sentiments such as love and devotion above institutional structures. While his ideas shared similarities with those of Étienne Cabet, La Gothiere rejected blind adherence to any particular ideology.

La Gothiere's socialist views placed him between the "sentimental communists" represented by Cabet and the "materialist communists" exemplified by Charles Dezame.
