British literary scholar, specializing in French literature, particularly the works of Marcel Proust.

Education and Early Career

Graduated from the University of Exeter, followed by a year of study at the University of Kansas, researching the life and work of composer Reynaldo Hahn.

Academic Career

Returned to the United Kingdom and completed a doctoral dissertation on medieval allusions and influences in the work of Proust at King's College, London. This dissertation formed the basis for his first monograph, "Proust and the Middle Ages" (1975), published by Cambridge University Press.

Subsequently published a monograph with Oxford University Press, entitled "Bricquebec: Prototype d' A L'Ombre Des Jeunes Filles En Fleurs" (1989).

Edited "The Cambridge Companion to Proust" (2001), a comprehensive guide to the life and works of Marcel Proust.

University of Belfast

Commenced teaching at Queen's University Belfast in 1973.
Promoted to Professor in 1996.
