Early Life and Education

Born in 1780 in Burgrass, Kentucky, Richard Mentor Johnson attended Transylvania University in Lexington and pursued a career in law.

Political Career

State Legislature and House of Representatives

Johnson's political journey commenced in 1804 as a representative in the Kentucky House of Representatives. From 1807 to 1819, he served in the United States House of Representatives.

Military Service

During the Anglo-American War, Johnson commanded a regiment in the Battle of Canada in 1813.

Senate and House of Representatives

From 1819 to 1829, Johnson represented Kentucky in the United States Senate. He returned to the House of Representatives from 1829 to 1837.

Vice Presidency

In 1837, Richard Mentor Johnson became the Vice President of the United States under Martin Van Buren. He was the first vice president elected under the Twelfth Amendment after failing to receive a majority vote from the Electoral College.

Later Life and Death

After serving as vice president until 1841, Johnson resumed his work in the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1850. He passed away in November of the same year from a stroke and was buried in Frankfort Cemetery.
