Richard Wesley Hamming was born in Chicago in 1915. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1937. Hamming continued his studies at the University of Nebraska, receiving his Master's degree in 1939. He then pursued his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, which he completed in 1942.

Academic Career

Hamming began his teaching career as a professor at the University of Louisville. However, his academic pursuits were interrupted in 1945 when he joined the Manhattan Project. With his knowledge of advanced mathematics, Hamming programmed one of the first electronic digital computers to perform complex calculations crucial for the project's success.

Bell Labs and Legacy

After the war, Hamming joined Bell Labs in 1946, where he collaborated with Claude Shannon and other renowned scientists. His contributions to the field of information theory were ground-breaking, introducing the Hamming code and Hamming distance, which revolutionized error detection and correction techniques. Hamming's work laid the foundation for modern telecommunications and computer science.

Naval Postgraduate School

In 1976, Hamming retired from Bell Labs and became the head of the computer science department at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He continued to mentor and inspire students in computational theory.
