Biography of Rick Allen
Early Life and Musical BeginningsRick Allen was born on November 1, 1963, in Dronfield, United Kingdom. From an early age, Rick had a passion for music, particularly the drums. However, instead of drumsticks, he initially used his mother's kitchen utensils. At the age of ten, Rick convinced his parents that he needed a proper drum kit. His parents bought him a high-quality drum set, and Rick promised to repay them half of the cost once he reached a certain level of proficiency. Rick Allen began learning to play the drums and quickly achieved success. After just six months of intensive practice, he joined his first band, Smokey Blue. He went on to play in several other groups, including Rampant and Johnny Kalendar Band.
Career with Def Leppard
When Rick turned fifteen, his life took a pivotal turn. It was during this time that he began his career with the band Def Leppard. In 1979, Allen decided to leave school to fully focus on his musical career. Around the same time, the band started performing their first concerts. One of these shows took place at Hammersmith Odeon, where Allen and his bandmates performed in celebration of Rick's sixteenth birthday. On March 14, 1980, Def Leppard recorded their debut album. From that moment on, Rick Allen and his bandmates embarked on extensive touring, starting in their home country and eventually expanding to international tours.
Tragic Accident and Comeback
On December 31, 1984, a tragic event occurred in Rick's life. While on the way to a New Year's Eve party, he was involved in a severe car accident. The accident resulted in significant injuries, and Rick's left arm had to be amputated due to a subsequent blood infection. Allen fell into a deep depression, questioning how he would continue to play the drums.
Despite the immense challenges, Rick persevered. He not only recovered physically and emotionally but also continued his musical career with Def Leppard. Today, Rick Allen remains the drummer of the band, showcasing his true talent, bravery, and genuine love for music – a lifelong pursuit.
Personal Life
In 2003, Rick Allen married Lauren Monroe, his second marriage. He has a daughter from his previous marriage.
