Canadian Marvel Fan Breaks Record with Body Covered in Comic Book Tattoos
A Canadian Marvel enthusiast has achieved a Guinness World Record by covering his entire body in tattoos featuring characters from the comic book universe.
The Origin of a Comic Book Fanatic
Rick Scolamiero, the Marvel-obsessed Canadian, has adorned almost his entire body with tattoos of iconic Marvel superheroes and villains. With 31 tattoos in total, Scolamiero officially holds the record for "Most Comic Book Character Tattoos on a Body."
A Work of Art Inspired by Childhood Memories
Scolamiero's first tattoo was of Spider-Man in 2011. Initially, he planned to limit his tattoos to his favorite Marvel heroes and villains, but he was so impressed by the tattoo artist's work that he wanted more. "I fell in love with what [the tattoo artist] had done and wanted to see where we could take it," said Scolamiero. "I've been a Marvel fan since I was little. We grew up poor, but I always had Marvel comic books and collector cards. It helped me through tough times, so I liked the idea of putting [the characters] on my body permanently."
A Comprehensive Marvel Universe on Skin
Scolamiero's tattoos include:Mystique on his neck
Galactus on his left shoulder
Silver Surfer on his left tricep
Phoenix on the inside of his left bicep
Wolverine on the inside of his left forearm
Spider-Man on the outside of his left forearm
Black Widow on his left abdomen
Spider-Man 2099 on his left buttock
Doctor Octopus on his left thigh
Mary Jane on the outside of his left quadriceps
Black Cat on the inside of his left thigh
Gwen Stacy on the upper back of his left calf
Green Goblin on the lower back of his left calf

The Journey to a Guinness Record
Scolamiero also has tattoos of Tupac Shakur on his chest and a baby wearing headphones with the caption "One Love." Additionally, he was fortunate enough to meet the legendary Marvel Comics creator, Stan Lee, who left an autograph on his wrist. Scolamiero, of course, turned the autograph into a full-fledged tattoo.
Creating Scolamiero's body art required multiple six-hour tattoo sessions, some of which were extremely painful. "If I had to pick the most painful spots, I would say the inside of my right quadriceps where I have the Hulk, and the Black Cat on the inside of my left thigh," said Scolamiero. "But it's bearable. I'm told I have a high pain tolerance. I just try to think of the pain as temporary and visualize how it's going to look!"
A Marvelous Masterpiece
Scolamiero's strategy clearly paid off. He visited the tattoo parlor once a month for the past seven years, resulting in 350 hours of meticulous work covering his body in superhero and supervillain ink.
His "living canvas" attracts countless stares from strangers who marvel at his unique body art. "I get asked all the time if I'll regret it when I'm older," said Scolamiero. "But I only have one response: I'd rather regret the things I don't do in life than the things I do have the courage to do."
Marvel's First Guinness Record Holder
Scolamiero has no plans to expand his Marvel collection on his body any further. He's still overwhelmed by the recognition he's received for his love of the Marvel universe. "It's just mind-blowing and surreal," he said. "I still can't believe it! I used to read Guinness World Records when I was a kid and teenager, but I never thought I'd actually break one. I'm honored and so proud of my accomplishment."
