Robbie Coltrane - Biography
Robbie Coltrane (real name Anthony Robert McMillan) was born on March 30, 1950, in Rutherglen, a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. He is currently one of the most popular comedic actors, although comedy was not always his artistic niche. Despite this, Coltrane has accumulated numerous notable roles in both comedic and dramatic films, such as "Van Helsing" and "Bondiana" ("The World Is Not Enough"). However, his most famous role to date is that of Rubeus Hagrid, the caretaker of the magical school, Hogwarts, in the "Harry Potter" film series.
Early Life and Education
Robert is the eldest son in his family, with two sisters named Annie and Jane. His mother, Jane McMillan, was a pianist and a schoolteacher, while his father, Ian Baxter McMillan, was a pediatrician. The McMillan family was able to provide their children with a good education thanks to the inheritance left by their maternal grandfather, Thomas William Howie, one of the most famous and wealthy businessmen of the Victorian era.
In his youth, there were no signs of the future theatrical fame that awaited Robbie. He was more interested in painting and cars. However, his acting debut took place at the age of 12 on the stage of a local college, although the young performer did not derive any pleasure from the experience. After finishing school, Robert attended Glenalmond College in Perthshire, and upon completion, he enrolled in the Glasgow School of Art. During his youth, Robbie had a keen interest in painting, music, and cars.
Acting Career
However, after completing his education, Robert surprised his parents by unexpectedly starting to perform comedy acts on theater and cabaret stages, rather than pursuing a career in painting. His television debut was in the series "A Kick Up the Eighties," which aired on the BBC in 1981. For the next decade, he primarily portrayed comedic characters in television series and moderately successful films. His long-standing passion for cars also played a role during this period, as Robert produced several television shows dedicated to this form of transportation. Despite being a fruitful period for the actor, none of his works brought him significant fame. He even began drinking and sought treatment for alcohol dependence in Mexico. It was during this time that the actor adopted the name Robbie Coltrane, in honor of his favorite jazz musician.
Coltrane's career took off in the 1990s. His first harbinger of future success was the role in the thriller film "Mona Lisa." The stellar cast of the film, including Bob Hoskins and Michael Caine, helped improve his performance, and it was thanks to this role that he was cast in the television series "Cracker" a few years later, where he played the character of Dr. Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald. For this role, Coltrane was honored with a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for "Best Television Actor." Even after many years and numerous other roles, Robert still considers this portrayal of a police psychologist one of his most challenging and successful works. Following "Cracker," he appeared in "Bondiana," where he starred in the film "The World Is Not Enough," the mystical thriller "From Hell" by the Hughes brothers, and, in the new millennium, "Harry Potter."
