Biography of Robert Probert

Early Career

Robert Probert was a Canadian professional hockey player who began his career with the Brantford Alexanders in the Ontario Hockey League. After being drafted, he spent another season with the Alexanders before playing for the Hamilton Steelhawks and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

NHL Career

Probert played for the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League. He was known for his physical style of play and was often referred to as a "enforcer" for his teams. Probert was also a skilled player, earning a spot in the Campbell Conference All-Star Team.

In 1989, Probert was arrested for cocaine possession at the Detroit-Windsor border. He served three months in a Minnesota prison and three months in a rehabilitation clinic. The NHL suspended Probert for a period of time following this incident.

Later Career and Retirement

After returning to the Detroit Red Wings, Probert became one of the team's alternate captains. He continued to accumulate penalty minutes but also contributed with points, averaging around 40 points per season. However, Probert's career was again marred by legal troubles when he was involved in a motorcycle accident in 1994. The incident revealed high levels of alcohol and traces of cocaine in his system. The Red Wings decided not to offer him a new contract.

Probert found a new home with the Chicago Blackhawks. Although his penalty minutes decreased, so did his point production. Despite this, he remained a strong physical presence and one of the team's top enforcers. After the 2001-2002 season, Probert was placed on waivers and no other teams picked him up. He unofficially retired on November 16, 2002, and his decision was later confirmed by the team's management.

Tragic End

On July 5, 2010, during a family boating trip, Probert experienced severe chest pain and lost consciousness. Despite efforts to revive him by his father-in-law, he could not be revived. Probert was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately could not be saved.
