Born and raised in the town of Rödermark, Germany, Robert Benz inherited his musical talent from his father, a private music teacher. At the tender age of four, he commenced his piano lessons under his father's tutelage. His exceptional abilities led him to pursue higher education at the Karlsruhe University of Music under the mentorship of Naoyuki Taneda. Subsequently, he further honed his skills at the prestigious Juilliard School under the guidance of Rosina Lhevinne and Martin Canin.

Benz's musical prowess was recognized globally when he triumphed as the first prize winner at the 1974 International Busoni Piano Competition.
