Elena Tauber: Romanian Musician and Composer
Elena Tauber (1789-1877) was a Romanian singer, pianist, and composer. Born in Vienna to a musical family, she received her early musical education from her father, a composer. Later, she studied in Vienna with the renowned opera singer Domenico Donzelli.
Musical Career
After completing her studies, Tauber became a professor at the Iași Conservatory, where she gained recognition as a pianist and composer from 1827 to 1863. She collaborated with her husband, the writer Gheorghe Asachi, on songs and theatrical works.
Marriage and the Philharmonic-Dramatic Conservatory
In 1827, Tauber married Asachi. Together, they played a pivotal role in establishing the first musical institution in the Moldavian Principality, the Philharmonic-Dramatic Conservatory (1836). This institution laid the foundation for musical education in Romania.
Legacy
Elena Tauber's legacy extends beyond her own musical accomplishments. As a professor and collaborator, she inspired generations of Romanian musicians. Her dedication to promoting music in her country helped shape the cultural landscape of Romania.
