Birth and Early Years
Alice McLeod, later known as Alice Coltrane, was born on August 27, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan. As a young artist, she studied classical music and jazz under the tutelage of Bud Powell.
Early Musical Career
In the early stages of her career, Alice performed professionally in Detroit as a jazz musician, playing in a trio and later in a duo with vibraphonist Terry Pollard. From 1962 to 1963, she joined Terry Gibbs's quartet.
Meeting John Coltrane
During this period, Alice met legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. In 1965, she became the pianist in his band, and in 1966, they married. John became a stepfather to Alice's daughter, Michele, and the couple had three more children together: John, Oran, and Ravi, all of whom became musicians.
Coltrane's Band and Spiritual Legacy
Alice played in her husband's band until his untimely passing in 1967. After John's death, she continued to lead various musical ensembles, often incorporating her sons into the groups. Her music increasingly reflected her deep spirituality and embraced meditative themes.
Later Years and Spiritual Path
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Alice left her mark with significant recordings released on Impulse! Records. She became a follower of Indian guru Sathya Sai Baba, and in 1972, she relocated to California, where she established a Vedantic spiritual center called Shree Shanti Ashram three years later.
Artistic Reinvention and Return to Music
In the late 1970s, Alice changed her name to the Sanskrit Turiyasangitananda. She became the spiritual director of Shree Shanti Ashram (later renamed Sai Anantam Ashram) while occasionally performing under her former name, Alice Coltrane.
Musical Resurgence and Passing
In the 1990s, there was renewed interest in her music, leading to the release of the compilation album Astral Meditations and the new album Translinear Light in 2004. Alice gave three concerts in the United States in the fall of 2006, with the largest one taking place in San Francisco on November 4, featuring Ravi Coltrane, drummer Roy Haynes, and bassist Charlie Haden.
On January 12, 2007, Alice Coltrane passed away at West Hills Hospital in Los Angeles due to respiratory failure. She was laid to rest next to her husband, John Coltrane, in Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, New York.
