American Operatic Tenor

Robert Bero is an American operatic tenor born in Michigan. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree (summa cum laude) from St. Norbert College in 1985, where he later received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997. Bero holds a Master of Music degree (1987) and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree (1991) from the University of Michigan, where he studied voice with soprano Lorna Haywood.

Early Training

Bero's initial training included two years at the Merola Opera Program in San Francisco and an apprenticeship at the Michigan Opera Theatre.

As a performer, Bero is known for his strong acting abilities and a wide-ranging repertoire, extending from Handel to contemporary works. In 2007, the New York City Opera awarded him the Kolozsvary Award for his performance in Handel's "Semele." He has recorded several world premieres, including James DeMars' opera "Guadalupe" and his oratorio "An American Requiem" with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, as well as Laurent Petitgirard's "Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man."

Pedagogical Career

Bero has taught voice since 1992, mentoring and collaborating with notable singers such as Selena Schafer, Paula Delligatti, Jennifer Larson, Gary Moss, Chad Hilligus, and Hugo Vera. He regularly serves as a voice teacher and stage director for the La Musica Lirica training program in Novafeltria, Italy. He has also given numerous solo recitals, including two debut recitals as part of the Schwabacher Debut Recital Series at the San Francisco Opera.
